Frequently Asked Questions

The ten questions we get most. Same answers feed the FAQPage Schema.org structured data on this page so search engines and answer engines see exactly what you do.

How much does the oruk API cost?
oruk has four public tiers: Free ($0/mo, 100 API calls, 5-minute API delay), Pro (7 days free, then $12/mo, 1,000 calls, real-time API), Trader (7 days free, then $49 for the first month, then $99/mo, 10,000 calls, real-time API + SSE stream + 2 keys), and Enterprise (1,000,000+ calls, custom). The full live wire on oruk.ai is real-time for everyone, including logged-out visitors — paid tiers add programmatic access, real-time API responses, and the SSE stream.
Is the oruk wire really free for everyone?
Yes. The homepage at oruk.ai shows the real-time, multi-source-corroborated wire to anyone who visits — no signup, no credit card, no delay. Paid tiers exist for programmatic access (REST API, SSE streaming) and higher quotas, not for the consumer wire.
Is there a free tier of the oruk API?
Yes — Free is permanent and does not require a credit card. You get 100 REST API calls per month, 1 API key, and access to the official MCP server with the public-feed fallback. Free responses lag the live wire by ~5 minutes; upgrade to Pro ($12/mo) or above for real-time API responses.
What counts as an API call?
Each request to a REST endpoint counts once. SSE counts once when the connection opens, not per event delivered. MCP tool invocations that reach the backend count once, with a ~3-second client-side cache that often collapses multi-tool turns into a single hit. Public endpoints (/health, /v1/health, /v1/stories/feed) do not count toward any quota.
How does oruk compare to NewsAPI.org or NewsData.io?
NewsAPI and NewsData aggregate text articles from web outlets; oruk listens to the live broadcast, social, and structured-data layers in parallel and corroborates events across independent sources before publishing. We win on multi-source corroboration, real-time SSE, and broadcast-first sourcing; competitors win on historical archive depth. The full table is below.
Can I use oruk with Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Continue.dev?
Yes. The official MCP server is published on npm as oruk-mcp; install with npx -y oruk-mcp and add it to any MCP-compatible client config. Without an API key it falls back to the public feed (~100 freshest stories); with ORUK_API_KEY set it lifts to the full filter surface, deeper history, and arbitrary evt_… story lookups.
Do you have promo codes?
Yes. Every self-serve paid plan now starts with 7 days free. Founders and early team members may still hand out personal referral codes; if you have one, enter it at Stripe checkout.
I'm already a $6 Pro subscriber — what happens to me?
Nothing. Existing $6/mo subscribers are grandfathered onto the Pro (Legacy) plan and stay at $6/mo as long as the subscription stays active. New signups go on the new $12/mo Pro plan.
Which tiers include the real-time SSE stream?
SSE streaming (/v1/stream) is included on Trader (7 days free, then $49 first month, then $99/mo) and above. Free and Pro tiers do not include SSE; for low-latency event delivery start at Trader or contact sales for Enterprise terms.
Do you offer enterprise pricing for high-volume use?
Yes. Enterprise is custom-priced and includes 1,000,000+ API calls per month, unlimited keys, real-time SSE, and dedicated support. Email enterprise@oruk.ai with your expected volume and we will quote within one business day.
How do I change or cancel a paid plan?
Paid plans are managed through Stripe's billing portal. Once you have an active subscription, the dashboard and pricing page link you straight to the portal where you can switch interval, change tier, update the card, or cancel. Cancellation is effective at the end of the current billing period.

How does oruk compare to NewsAPI, NewsData, and Echo?

Most news APIs aggregate text articles from web outlets. oruk listens to the live broadcast, social, and structured-data layers in parallel, then corroborates events across independent sources before publishing. We win on multi-source corroboration, real-time SSE, and broadcast-first sourcing; competitors win on historical archive depth. Where competitors win, we list it honestly.
