Utrecht Province Allocates 6 Million Euro For Waterway Restoration
In the eastern part of Utrecht, winding ditches will be restored. The province and water boards are allocating millions of euros for this over the coming years. Ecologists state that winding ditches are better for aquatic life and seem to dry out less quickly. The province of Utrecht and the local water board are investing 6 million euros to restore approximately 12 kilometers of straight ditches and streams. The project involves reintroducing bends to the waterways to facilitate natural ecological recovery. The funding will also support the planting of trees and vegetation along the water edges. This initiative reverses historical practices where waterways were straightened for drainage purposes.
