Zawiya Refinery Evacuated After Incident, Damages Feared
A state of emergency has been declared at Libya's Zawiya oil refinery amidst nearby clashes, according to Reuters. The Zawiya refinery, located 40 kilometers west of the capital Tripoli, is Libya's largest operating oil refinery with a production capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. Clashes spread to the center of Zawiya city, Libya, between residential neighborhoods after a group of settlers reportedly stormed lands. The violence led to damage to citizens' property, including homes. Unofficial statistics indicate two people were killed and five others sustained various injuries. The Libyan Red Crescent appealed to the warring parties in Zawiya to open safe corridors for evacuating trapped individuals. All workers at the Zawiya refinery were secured, and the area, including the refinery and the oil port, was evacuated.
