Former F1 Driver Alex Zanardi Dies At 59
Former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi has died at the age of 59. He underwent 16 surgeries and lost the use of his legs but continued his sports career. Alessandro Zanardi is being remembered as a hero for his recovery and for inspiring hundreds of injured and paralyzed people after his 2001 accident. He showed them how to recover and move forward. The Italian raced in over 40 Formula 1 races between 1991 and 1999, and was briefly a teammate of Ralf Schumacher. Zanardi had a racing accident in 2001 during a Champcar series race. Zanardi became a Paralympic champion after losing his legs in a crash. Motorsports governing body the FIA issued a statement honoring Alex Zanardi. The FIA described Zanardi as embodying courage, resilience, and the best values of racing. Zanardi suffered serious head injuries in 2020 when his handbike crashed into a truck during a road race in Italy.
