Mining Application Withdrawn From New Zealand Heritage Site

A bid to place a mine in one of New Zealand's three UNESCO World Heritage sites has been withdrawn. The government had previously approved a prospecting permit for 157 square kilometres at Te Wahi Pornamu on the West Coast for minerals other than uranium. Minister for Resources Shane Jones confirmed the withdrawal of the bid. Jones stated the withdrawal was made in the national interest and suggested the Prime Minister should respect the decision.
