Armed groups seized control of the Timbuktu district in Mali on April 30. Sources report the Azawad Liberation Front has taken control of the Timbuktu district capital following clashes.

Malian armed forces and Russian forces conducted attacks on enemy positions in Igot, according to reports. The Lazawa Liberation Front stated that no casualties were reported from their side.

Army positions near Gourmararou, close to Timbuktu, were attacked during the day. Sources indicate the positions are currently occupied by the JNIM and the FLA. The attack occurred on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Malian armed forces and Russian forces conducted operations against enemy positions in Mali. The Liberation Front of Azawad (FLA) reported no casualties following the engagement. Near Timbuktu, the Agourmararu and Serréfi areas saw army positions attacked and subsequently occupied by JNIM and FLA forces. A blockade remains in effect near the capital, including the cutting of the road to Sikasso in the east.

Human Rights Watch reports that the Malian army and Russian forces have engaged in systematic abuses and a policy of terror. The reports include summary executions and massacres targeting populations in Douenza, Kayes, Segou, and Timbuktu.
