Xue Lingen is a master of Suzhou traditional garden construction, a craft listed as a Chinese national intangible heritage in 2006 and a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2009. A Suzhou artisan was selected for a project at the Metropolitan Museum involving a three-meter-tall Hu Shi peak. Xu Linggen, a 74-year-old artisan, has been recognized for his work spanning from Suzhou to New York, Nagasaki, and Beijing. The Xiangshanbang architectural style, originating from Xukou Town in Suzhou, has been practiced since the Spring and Autumn period.

Suzhou Artisan Named To National Cultural Relic List
A 74-year-old Xiangshan bamboo craftsman, Xue Linggen, has been included in China's first list of master cultural relic artisans. The resulting construction caused a sensation in both China and the United States upon completion. Since 1980, he has trained 12 apprentices to preserve regional building memories. He has contributed to the field by teaching at universities, writing textbooks, producing documentaries, and establishing a woodworking research laboratory. Xue also utilizes digital technology to assist in the restoration of historical wooden structures. The lineage of craftsmanship continues through his son, Xue Dong, who serves as the current director of the Taihu Ancient Architecture Design Institute. While modern machinery can carve bricks more efficiently, Xue Linggen noted that machine-carved products fail to meet specific traditional craftsmanship requirements.

The design mimics ancient bronze ware and includes raised patterns known as 'chuji' to symbolize strength and prosperity. The object measures 26 centimeters in height and 21 centimeters in diameter. The vessel's design imitates ancient bronze weaponry, specifically the 'chuji' style, which symbolizes national strength and prosperity. The bowl features a ring foot and a smooth surface with various decorative lines. Experts note that vessels with these specific markings are rare, with only about 10 such pieces known to exist worldwide.
