Romanian Rural Areas Vulnerable to Large Fires
Over 300 people were evacuated yesterday in the Soveja commune, Vrancea county. Historical records indicate a fire occurred in the same commune in 1943. The blaze was reportedly started by a German soldier using gasoline to light a fire. This event is described as more than a recent incident in the same commune. A recent fire in Soveja, Romania, resulted in the evacuation of 32 houses and caused damage. This incident is contrasted with a more severe fire in 1943 that affected 500 homes. The village of Soveja, Romania, has a history of fires, with one incident in 1944 destroying over 400 homes. Further fires in 1998 affected 500 dwellings and 45 households, with additional houses damaged in subsequent years. A recent fire in 2026 also caused extensive damage, with some residents losing nearly all their possessions.
