Ticatsu Local Currency Expands In Reunion Island
A new local currency named Tikatsu has begun circulating on Reunion Island this week. Created by the Noutemonnaie association, the currency is designed to stimulate the local economy by favoring short supply chains and territorial solidarity. The exchange rate is set at one euro per one Tikatsu. Local citizens and merchants in Saint-Paul have begun testing the system to support social and solidarity economy actors. The currency is currently usable in nearly 30 businesses. The association Loutemonnaie aims to use the currency to maximize the use of local resources and increase territorial wealth. The project intends to expand the currency's circulation across the entire island. Laurent Payet, co-president of the Loutemonnaie association, stated the currency helps maximize the use of local resources and encourages territorial residency.
