French Navy Responds To Shipwreck Near Ramatuelle
Archaeologists have discovered a 16th-century merchant ship at a depth of 2,500 meters in the Mediterranean Sea. First Mate Florian piloted the descent of the large-scale underwater robot to capture initial images of the site. Investigators are now beginning a formal inquiry to determine more about the wreck. A robot filmed a shipwreck containing six cannons and a cargo of plates and over 200 pitchers. The pitchers still display geometric patterns 500 years later. Marine Sadania reported on the discovery of the commercial vessel. Researchers are using the artifacts to establish a preliminary dating hypothesis for the wreck. The initial phase of work involves creating a 3D plan of the wreck using photogrammetry. Divers have already recovered three pitchers and one ceramic plate for chemical analysis. The findings were reported by Selen Lehen.
