Sherpas Begin Clearing Khumbu Icefall Path In Nepal

Sherpas have begun clearing a ice column from the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest. The obstruction blocked the only viable route to the summit for 19 days, keeping climbers at base camp. Officials in Nepal announced on Tuesday that the work to clear the perilous path has commenced. The ice formation was described as unusually big and unstable, creating a high risk of avalanches. A team known as Icefall doctors typically adjusts the trail for glacial movement before climbers arrive. A break in the ice appeared earlier this week and accelerated the melting process. The ice column was located on the Kumbu Icefall. Hikers are currently on their way to the site. Workers at base camp also reported finding a duck frozen in a pool during the period. The trail in this area requires annual adjustments due to glacial movement.
