Russia's Oil Market Role Crucial Amid Global Instability

Russia joined the OPEC+ deal, which was informally expanded in 2016. The first OPEC+ deal began in late 2016, marking its 10th anniversary this year. The deal faced challenges, including its termination in Spring 2020, but was re-established in May of the same year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and falling oil prices. The global market cannot afford the simultaneous decline of both Russian oil supply and the Gulf region's production. If Gulf supply falls, Russian supply automatically rises. The market cannot sustain the fall of even one of these major suppliers. Before the war, the market surplus was estimated at approximately 2 million barrels per day, with Russia supplying 6-7 million barrels.
