US To Withdraw 5,000 Troops From Germany
The United States plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 military personnel from Germany. The US is also reportedly considering raising tariffs on automobiles from the European Union, deviating from existing agreements. Additionally, the US intends to raise tariffs on EU automobiles, deviating from existing EU treaties. This move follows threats from President Trump to reduce American forces and appears to be a rebuke to the NATO ally. The withdrawal was originally scheduled for late March but was rescheduled to allow the US to focus on the Middle East conflict. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, US troop numbers in the country reached 250,000. Following the Cold War, numbers declined significantly, reaching 72,400 in 2006. Reuters reports the operation is expected to take 12 months to complete.
