EU Methane Tax Impacts Polish Coking Coal

A methane emission tax is making coking coal from the Jaścinskie Spółka Węglowa mine unable to compete in the European Union market. Former Deputy Economy Minister Jerzy Markowski noted that the tax scale eliminates its chances for sale within the EU. This occurs despite the European Union labeling coking coal as a strategic product for the European economy. The tax policy appears to contradict the strategic designation of the resource. The tax scale effectively removes the coal's viability for sale in the EU. Former Deputy Minister of Economy Jerzy Markowski stated that the methane emissions tax makes coal from the Jaścina Coal Basin uncompetitive in the EU market, despite the EU labeling coking coal a strategic product.
