France Authorizes Fessenheim Nuclear Plant Dismantling
The decree was signed by Economy Minister Sébastien Lecornu and the Minister Delegate for Energy on Friday. EDF will be responsible for the decommissioning process of the site, which has been closed since 2020. The dismantling process is expected to be completed by 2024. This decision marks a step in the country's energy policy. The plant's closure was previously decided. Operations to decommission the facility are expected to be completed within 22 years. EDF will complete the full dismantling of the former Fessenheim nuclear power plant in Haut-Rhin by 2048 at the latest. The process includes the dismantling of sensitive components such as the reactors. The closure was described as unnecessary and costly, resulting in a loss of potential electricity production.
