Approximately 210 law enforcement officers are conducting searches in the Euskirchen prison and several residences belonging to judicial employees. The operations are taking place in the Euskirchen district, Rhein-Erft-Kreis, and Leverkusen. Authorities are investigating suspected corruption involving judicial staff. The searches follow reports of potential misconduct within the prison system. Police conducted searches at a correctional facility, an office at the Euskirchen District Court, and several apartments belonging to judicial officials. Police conducted searches at parts of the Euskirchen Correctional Facility and several residences in the Rhineland on Wednesday morning. Two hundred and ten police officers participated in the operation. Eight justice employees are suspected of granting inmates unauthorized prison leave in exchange for payments.

Patrick Rothkopf, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, reported that while overnight stay numbers are good, real revenues have fallen compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Overnight stays in North Rhine-Westphalia are 40% higher than pre-pandemic levels. Many of these guests are domestic travelers from within the state.

The mayor of Euskirchen, Reichelt, expects delays in the refilling of the Steinbach Dam due to the need for new nature conservation reports. Additional specialists must survey the wildlife at the reservoir before work can proceed, a process expected to last until autumn.
