Vietnamese generals Đào Tâm Lan, Đào Chiu Hiền, and Đào Đô Thống retreated from Cộng Thành after the city walls were breached and fires spread. Realizing their forces were defeated, they ordered a withdrawal towards the west gate, leading to the ancient citadel of Cổ Loa. To impede pursuit, they ordered the destruction of a stone bridge over a deep moat.
