Amphibian Populations Decline Near Biebrza River
Amphibian populations are dying out in the Biebrza region, according to Krzysztof Bach of Biebrza National Park. Areas that previously hosted several thousand individuals now only contain single specimens. The decline is noted in the Biebrza river area. Krzysztof Bach reported that a recent count in Goniącz yielded only three toads, compared to previous years where counts exceeded 6,000 individuals. The lack of water during the critical spring breeding period prevents tadpoles from successfully metamorphosing into adults. The lack of water during the spring breeding season, specifically before tadpoles metamorphose into adults, is cited as a primary cause.
