Prime Minister Jetten described the action as idiotic and completely unacceptable on the day of Remembrance Day. Local residents expressed anger and described the incident as scandalous. It is currently unclear if the damage was intended to seek attention. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema stated the graffiti is offensive to those for whom the memorial service is. The incident occurred ahead of a memorial service scheduled for that evening. Red paint was sprayed onto a monument in Amsterdam. Mayor Halsma published photos showing the defaced monument.
