Taiwanese AI Executives Barred From Leaving China
Manus CEO Xiao Hong and Chief Scientist Ji Yichao have been prohibited from leaving mainland China since late March. The executives, who were based in Singapore and had moved their primary assets there, were previously involved in the sale of their company to Meta. Meta announced the acquisition of Manus for its 'universal AI' technology in December, with reports suggesting the price was close to $2 billion USD. Chinese regulators have recently notified several Chinese AI startups that they cannot negotiate investments or mergers with foreign companies without approval, indicating a negative stance on foreign acquisitions of high-tech enterprises.
