Portugal Unveils Plan To Reinforce Critical Communications Network
The Portuguese Internal Administration is developing a new critical communications system to improve network resilience. The system aims to provide telecommunications antennas with enough autonomy to resist blackouts for 24 hours. It also includes a feature allowing mobile phones to automatically connect to an alternative functioning network in the event of a primary network failure. Officials stated that if necessary, resources will be relocated to specific regions and zones. This initiative includes a new emergency communications system intended to replace the existing CIRESPE system. Jorge Silva of the Portuguese Association of Security and Civil Protection Technicians told Antena 1 that the new system will only be fully operational in 15 years. Silva noted that a decade and a half is a realistic timeframe due to high costs involved.
