Geneticist Ventner Dies At 79
US geneticist Greg Van Der has died at the age of 79 in San Diego. Van Der contributed to decoding the human genome at the beginning of the millennium. He also created the first bacterium with artificial genetic material. Some scientists had previously criticized his work, with some accusing him of megalomania. His research contributed to the understanding of hereditary diseases and the development of personalized cancer therapies. Ventner founded a research institute and led teams that first created a synthetic cell based on an artificially assembled genome. The scientist played a role in transitioning biology toward large-scale genetic data analysis.
