Glaciers In Northern Sweden Melt Entirely

The Copernicus Institute reported that warming is particularly pronounced in Scandinavia and the Arctic, where sea ice has reached historically low levels. Glaciologist Nina Kircher, based at the Tarfala research station in northern Sweden, stated that 8 of the 277 glaciers in Sweden melted entirely in 2024. Kircher noted that these glaciers are unlikely to reform. These glaciers are not expected to reform within the lifetime of current or future generations. The changes are affecting downstream ecosystems, infrastructure, trails, and electrical provisioning. Glaciers in Sweden are approaching a tipping point with irreversible consequences due to Arctic warming. Increased water levels are causing erosion and landslides.
