Singapore Explores Geothermal Heat Potential
The Sambawang Hot Springs have been earmarked as a potential site for geothermal energy in Singapore. The study aims to provide a better understanding of how much geothermal energy could be integrated into the national energy mix. A study in the December 1 area measured high temperature gradients of approximately 122 degrees Celsius at a depth of 1.7 kilometers. Subsequent studies conducted at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have also investigated these thermal issues. Researchers at Nanyang Technological University noted that the extent of potential energy resources is currently difficult to determine. The survey aims to clarify if geothermal potential is unique to the North or exists in other parts of the country. Further mapping is required before making definitive claims regarding resource availability.

“I think many of you have seen the reports or seen the videos or maybe went down to visit yourself places like the Sambawang Hot Springs, subsurface temperatures of 122 degrees Celsius. Well, it's also being earmarked as an area in Singapore with geothermal energy potential.”
“the Sambawang Hot Springs, subsurface temperatures of 122 degrees Celsius. Well, it's also being earmarked as an area in Singapore with geothermal energy potential.”
“the gradients of around the thermal activity and the hospital basically is an indication that the fluids from the subsurface can circulate all the way up to the surface”
“So when we looked actually at ongoing nationwide geophysical survey. Earlier studies have pointed to signs of potential. The temperature, we should think of what we call the production well temperature”
“ongoing nationwide geophysical survey. Earlier studies have pointed to signs of potential. The temperature, we should think of what we call the production well temperature... normally we might want to have temperatures beyond 150 degrees for power generation, but if you look at temperature below 150 degrees Celsius, there is still a lot of merit.”
“It's become very useful to Singapore for what concerned the cooling supply to buildings, to data centers for instance that require a lot of cooling demand and then that indirectly can have to offset the demand in terms of electricity”
“Singapore explores geothermal energy potential... it could also have this cooling angle as well, potentially. And in order to tap into this, so to explore that avenue, we might not have to drill too deep.”
“projects that are trying to create wind corridors and air corridors, maybe this could be part of natural air conditioning. So that's great because it's not always just about flash steam.”
