Researcher Establishes Cycad Protection Base in Yunnan

CRI News Radio Funing 14d14d Impact 5

Researchers have released 200 artificially cultivated Cycas panzhiensis plants into the wild in Funing, Yunnan. Scientists are utilizing molecular identification technology to assist in the recovery of these small populations. Mangrove restoration efforts are also ongoing across Guangdong province. Local villagers in Gula Township, Funing County, have protected over 300 Cycas dubia plants for more than 20 years. The protection began when residents noticed rising water levels in the Gula River affecting plant growth. Lacking specific botanical knowledge at the time, villagers moved the plants to their own land to ensure survival. This spontaneous ecological effort has maintained the grove on a hillside in Gula Township. Residents began moving the plants from the Gu La River banks to their own land to prevent damage from rising water levels.

This spontaneous conservation effort established a protection base for the critically endangered species. Mao Jihua, an assistant researcher from the Yunnan Provincial Academy of Forestry and Grassland, noted the community's proactive ecological awareness. Mao Jihua, an assistant researcher at the Yunnan Tropical Botanical Garden, has spent 20 years protecting rare cycad species. Assistant researcher Mao Jihua established the base on his own land to support scientific research and local conservation efforts.
