Scientists are investigating whether exoplanets possess atmospheres as a primary step before considering the detection of life. An atmosphere is for regulating temperature, shielding from cosmic rays, and allowing liquid water to exist. Without an atmosphere, even a planet in a habitable zone would be sterile.
