New Asian Elephant Born At Smithsonian National Zoo
The first Asian baby elephant, named Lin Mai, has been born at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Staff are providing maternal support to ensure the calf's well-being. Conservationists note that the species has lost approximately 80% to 85% of its former habitat range. The zoo is hosting a celebration where visitors can win artwork inspired by the elephant's footprint. Visitors can view the elephant via a live online elephant cam. The zoo is celebrating the debut with themed art, including a painting made by the elephant's parents. The new elephant, named Lenmae, brings the total number of Asian elephants at the Washington, D.C. Linmae's mother rejected her at birth, requiring intervention from zoo staff to provide support and ensure she learns elephant behaviors. Visitors can win a painting made by Linmae's parents, and an online elephant cam offers global viewing.
