Expert Proposes Migratory Bird Protection Measures In Beijing

The 2026 Beijing Wild Animal List has been released, identifying five new species added since last year. Migratory birds are also increasingly frequenting urban parks, wetlands, and lakes in the region. These measures aim to reduce the distance birds must travel for water and increase mating and fledgling success rates. The program includes establishing rescue zones for injured or orphaned birds, with a policy to release them back into the wild to maintain their natural instincts. The 2025 edition of the Beijing Terrestrial Wildlife Directory now includes 527 bird species. A special survey of migratory birds in Beijing, led by Professor Deng Wenhong of Beijing Normal University's School of Life Sciences, has identified key habitats. The research identified three primary corridors: the Yan-Ya River along the Grand Canal, a raptor corridor along Yanqing and Xishan, and a passerine corridor near the Guanting Reservoir. Deng recommended creating closed areas to avoid disturbing bird gatherings. He also suggested establishing a collaborative protection and observation system with Hebei Province and Tianjin. Deng Wenhong has proposed creating closed migratory corridors for various bird species, including raptors and passerines, near the Grand Canal and Beijing's western reservoirs. Deng suggested reducing pesticide use in bird hotspots to prevent pollution and species decline. He also recommended using technology to enhance monitoring capabilities through a long-term expert tracking team.
