Deep Sea Expedition Confirms Species Gigantism
DNA analysis has identified a mysterious golden object found in the deep sea as the severed base of a anemone, Relicanthus dafnae. The specimen was found clinging to a rock in the dark ocean depths. Researchers previously spent months attempting to explain the strange, punctured, and smooth structure. The discovery clarifies that the object is not a new species or an egg. Researchers conducting in situ observations in the Mediterranean have confirmed the presence of giant species. Samples show sponges reaching 2 meters in size and starfish possessing 45 arms. Post-doctoral researcher Juliette Jackmont from the University of California is studying fish in the mesopelagic zone between 60 and 200 meters. The expedition aims to provide direct observations of these deep-sea species.

“DNA revealed it wasn't an egg or a new species, but a severed base of a massive deep sea anemone. Relicanthus dafnae, the creature itself gone, leaving behind only this eerie golden remnant.”

“On en voit ça en Méditerranée et elles sont beaucoup plus petites. À bord, le premier tri des échantillons a permis de confirmer le gigantisme des espèces. Ici, les éponges, je peux faire 2 mètres, les étoiles de mer, avoir 45 bras.”
