Oak Trees Delay Budding To Combat Caterpillars
Researchers from the University of Würzburg and other European teams found that oak trees react directly to pest infestations. Trees heavily damaged by caterpillars in one year will experience delayed budding the following spring. The study indicates that biological threats, alongside weather, influence the timing of green leaf emergence. Producing bitter tannins in leaves requires energy, so trees opt for a delay strategy instead. This discovery changes the current scientific understanding of how spring begins in the forest. The study suggests this approach is more energy-efficient for the trees. When trees are heavily consumed by caterpillars, they delay budding by approximately three days the following spring. This delay reduces the survival chances of the caterpillars, which have synchronized their life cycles with the trees.
