Space-Launched Yeast Produces Sake In Orbit

Baywave FM Japan Ishinomaki 12d11d Impact 5

A project aimed at creating sake using yeast grown in space has resulted in the completion of 100cc of sake. A project involving the International Space Station successfully produced 100cc of sake using Japanese yeast. The project successfully completed 100cc of sake using yeast that fermented for two weeks in orbit following an October launch. A 100cc sample of sake produced from yeast fermented on the International Space Station was successfully brought back to Earth in March. A Japanese alcohol manufacturer has successfully conducted an experiment to produce sake raw materials in Earth's orbit. The experiment took place within the Kibō module on the International Space Station. The process involved using lifting mechanisms and systems for managing gas, liquid, and electrical power supplies.

The fermented beverage was sold for 110 million yen, approximately $700,000, to fund Japan's space program. Researchers will send the sediment to a laboratory to study genetic changes in the yeast.

“作りを見据えた脱災ムーンプロジェクトによりまして 国際宇宙セーションで日本種のもろみを上蔵し それを日本種にしようという計画でした 去年10月に打ち上げられた原料は 日本の実験等希望で2週間発行させまして もろみに変化したそうです それを3月地球に持ち帰って このほど日本酒100ccが完成したんですね”
