Institute Honors Camellia Researcher Liu Youtang

In 1950, Liu donated 62 varieties and 6,126 camellia books to establish the garden's foundation. He followed this in February 1951 with an additional donation of 4,208 camellia plants. His daughter, Liu Heshen, recalled that he lived frugally to prioritize spending on these living specimens. Liu is recognized for donating several thousand camellias to the institution. The station, formerly known as the Kunming Botanical Institute, recognized his contributions through this appointment. Liu dedicated resources to cultivating thousands of camellias during his life. The Kunming Botanical Garden has named a camellia after Liu Youtang. The Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has formally appointed Liu Youtang as a posthumous honorary member.
