Syrian Authorities Target Former Assad-Linked Official
The new Syrian leadership is moving to hold former high-ranking members of the Assad security and government apparatus accountable. This includes Najib, a cousin of Bashar al-Assad, who was arrested in January 2025. Najib is associated with the violent suppression of protests in Dar'a province in 2011. Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists and rebel groups have reportedly conducted attacks in the Dar'a province.
