Republican-Leaning Maps Implemented In Five US States
Republicans in several southern U.S. states are attempting to pass new congressional maps ahead of the midterm elections. This movement follows a Supreme Court ruling that gutted the Voting Rights Act. In Louisiana, the governor has suspended U.S. House races to allow the legislature to draw a new map. Early voting in Louisiana began this past weekend. Former Attorney General Eric Holder is currently heading a redistricting task force for the Democrats. The National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) is leading a Democratic strategy to address voting maps in several southern US states. The group was launched shortly after the 2016 election of Donald Trump. Former Attorney General Eric Holder has served as the NDRC chairman since its inception. Early voting in these regions is scheduled to continue until May 16th.
