Philadelphia Awards Violence Prevention Grants, Crime Down 6%
Philadelphia City Sanitation Commissioner Crystal Jacobs Shipman announced the distribution of $76,000 in grant funds for local schools. A total of 32 district, charter, independent, and parochial schools received grants of up to $2,500 each. Jeremiah Torres, a third grader at Esperanza Academy, stated the school used its grant to plant a garden. The funding initiative was announced on Friday night. State Senator Vincent Hughes and local leaders celebrated these grants. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, all violent crime in the city is down by over 6%, which officials attribute directly to the work of these organizations.
