The United Kingdom has passed legislation that will eventually prohibit the purchase of cigarettes. The bill aims to restrict access to tobacco products through new regulatory frameworks. This move follows ongoing public health discussions regarding nicotine consumption. Britain's plan to ban future generations from purchasing cigarettes has become law. The policy aims to prevent new smokers from entering the market, though questions remain regarding its long-term effectiveness. Henry Tong, Chairman of the Council on Smoking and Health, discussed the legislation on BackChat. The United Kingdom passed a law on Wednesday that permanently bars anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, from legally purchasing cigarettes. The legislation also includes tightened rules regarding the marketing and display of vaping and other nicotine products. The law has received royal assent. While the ban does not cover vapes, the law grants ministers broad powers to regulate vape flavors, packaging, product names, and point of sale displays. Government officials stated the measures are intended to deter non-smokers and those under 18 from using tobacco products. Cheeseman noted the law is designed to control smoking by shifting usage to older demographics.
