Non-Indigenous Hippos Roam Free In Magdalena Medio
The Colombian government has delivered approximately 19,000 hectares of land in the Magdalena Medio region to peasants for agricultural production. The government said that land will be recovered if it is used to serve private interests instead of the national agrarian reform plan. The animals are described as territorial and aggressive, causing displacement of native species including manatees and chymons. An offer has been made by the son of an Indian billionaire to transport about 80 hippos to a private nature reserve. The presence of these animals is affecting local waters.

“200 hippos roaming freely in this area. And they're not indigenous creatures. Apart from everything, they are very territorial and aggressive animals, so they will displace and they are displacing our native species”
