Athens Mayor Calls for Sustainable Tourism Plan
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas has expressed concerns regarding the impact of mass tourism on the city's authenticity. He suggested implementing restrictions on investments within the tourism sector to prevent the historic center from functioning solely as a hotel zone. Doukas stated that cities must have a voice in their own development. The proposal follows efforts last year to encourage the use of public transport over private vehicles in the capital. Officials noted that available space for new developments is diminishing. The plan aims to manage the impact of tourism on local infrastructure. Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis stated that the city needs proper infrastructure to handle tourism. He criticized the current system where tourists pay hotel fees but the municipality receives no funds.
