Conservatives Pressure Prime Minister Over Parliamentary Investigation
Members of Parliament are debating whether the Prime Minister should be subject to an inquiry regarding his honesty and competence. Sir Philip Barton, former Foreign Office chief, also testified that he had expressed concerns about Mandelson's appointment to officials. A Downing Street spokesperson described the action as a desperate political stunt by the Conservative Party ahead of local elections. Fifteen Labour MPs voted against the Prime Minister, with several others abstaining from the vote. One commentator noted that if the subject has nothing to hide, there should be nothing to fear in court. More than a dozen Labour MPs, including Emma Luhti, backed a motion for the privileges committee to consider whether the Prime Minister misled Parliament. The discussion occurred following comments regarding Kemi Badenoch.
