Swiss National Council Weakens Nursing Care Proposal

The Swiss government has weakened proposed labor reforms for nurses in Bern. According to National Councilor Cyril Allen, the tightening of reforms is driven by cost concerns and fears of excessive interference in labor relations. The changes may also require more personnel in a sector already facing shortages. The reform includes provisions for coffee breaks to be counted as paid work. Current staffing shortages persist despite theoretical plans for increased compensation and personnel. Healthcare workers are reportedly leaving the profession due to exhaustion and intense workloads. This shortage is described as a continuous cycle driven by existing labor conditions. Switzerland faces a projected shortage of tens of thousands of nurses by 2029. Many professionals are leaving the field prematurely due to working conditions that conflict with family life, according to the report. The Social Democratic Party (SP) stated that the current proposal falls below the minimum requirements established when 61% of voters approved the nursing care initiative. Lawmakers in the commission have been advocating for clearer definitions on how these measures will be financed. The party said the need to fulfill the mandate given by the electorate through proper funding.
