Kremlin Vows Continued Fight Against Mali Extremism

developing France Culture Bamako 14d12d Impact 8

The Kremlin has called for a swift return to stability in Mali following recent attacks by jihadists and Tuareg rebels. Coordinated attacks over the weekend by Tuareg separatists and Islamist militants have pushed Russian forces out of key northern towns in Mali. The attacks were described as seemingly very effective. Mali's vast geography has left northern regions exposed to these coordinated efforts. UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujari called for coordinated international support to address growing threats from violent extremism and terrorism in Mali. The humanitarian and intervention plan is currently only 13% funded, leaving a deficit of 76 million euros. The army reported killing more than 200 terrorists across all attacked zones. Defense Minister Sadio Kamara was killed during these attacks. This funding gap leaves 76 million euros missing for the planned operations.

The Russian response comes after the FLA rebels called for the withdrawal of Russian military forces from Mali. Moscow maintains it will continue providing assistance to the current authorities in Mali.
