Austrian Ombudsman Reports High Volume Of Complaints
The Austrian Ombudsman Board reported finding malpractice or deficiencies in 16 percent of cases reviewed in 2025. Over 23,100 people were examined by the board during that period. Staff shortages are exacerbating issues in various sectors, including the police, judicial institutions, and elderly care homes. The new youth prison in Vienna remains a concern for the Ombudsman, according to the report. FPÖ Ombudsman Christoph Luisser stated that the need for assistance with authorities remains high. According to a report from the Ombudsman's office, approximately 12,500 reviews have been completed. About 1,500 complaints were found to be justified. The report also noted personnel shortages within the judiciary. Additionally, the number of inmates at the Mönigplatz juvenile prison in Vienna is expected to increase from 72 to 90.
