German Education Monitor Shows Inequality Gap

BR24 Berlin 15d15d Impact 5

Federal Family Minister Brin presented the results of the Chancenmonitor report today. The findings indicate that educational opportunities in Germany are significantly unequal. Factors such as parental educational attainment continue to influence children's educational outcomes. The report suggests Germany remains far from achieving educational equity. The report was presented by Susi Weichselbaumer. According to the Micro-Census data, a child from the lowest income quartile whose parents do not have an Abitur has only a 17 percent probability of attending a Gymnasium. In contrast, a child from the highest income quartile with two Abitur-holding parents has over an 80 percent probability of attending a Gymnasium. The IFO Institute presented its 2026 Chancenmonitor report in Berlin today.

In contrast, a child from the highest income quartile with two Abitur-holding parents has over an 80 percent probability of attending a Gymnasium. The IFO Institute presented its 2026 Chancenmonitor report in Berlin today. Specifically, the probability of a child attending a Gymnasium is significantly lower for those whose parents do not have an Abitur and belong to the lowest income bracket. The study, which has been active since 2023, also examined gender differences for the first time. Findings indicate that 7 percent fewer boys than girls attend Gymnasium, a trend that appears largely independent of family background. Researchers are using these findings to derive educational policy recommendations.
