French Deputy Challenges Public Media Merger Proposal
Mathilde Pano, a deputy for France Insoumise, stated that thorium remains present in the French subsoil. Her comments followed a discussion regarding energy independence and the desire for 100% renewable energy to reduce reliance on oil and uranium. Pano's remarks addressed claims that France lacks domestic thorium reserves. While the last uranium mine closed in 2001, approximately 250 sites have historically extracted 80,000 tonnes of uranium in the country. EDF currently purchases about 7,000 tonnes of uranium annually from Canada, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan to fuel nuclear plants. The deputy's comments suggest a potential shift in energy resource reliance. Centrist deputy Charles Aloncle has proposed a counter-report to evaluate the relevance of recent public media merger recommendations.
