French Government Supports Repatriation of Calina Remains

RFI Monde Paris 15d15d Impact 3
The French government announced support for a text to facilitate the repatriation of Calina remains to French Guiana. At least 7 people have died and 81 have been injured in a separate reported incident. The Calina remains have been held in the Musée de l'Homme in Paris since the late 19th century. Descendants, including Corinne Tocque of the Molico Alette association, have campaigned for years for their return. Corinne Tocque, head of the association, noted the historical significance of the remains. The move represents a first step for the descendants in their long-standing effort. A law regarding the repatriation of remains will be examined by the French Senate on May 18 under an accelerated procedure.
