US Accused of Funding Nicaraguan Contras

France Culture The Hague 15d15d Impact 5
The International Court of Justice ruled that the United States, by training, arming, equipping, financing, and supplying the Contras, acted against the Republic of Nicaragua. The court decided this by a vote of 12 to 3. This ruling establishes a precedent for international law regarding respect for sovereignty and the prohibition of the use of force. Alguenlo previously participated in the Sandinista war against the Somoza dictatorship and later served as Minister of Justice. He was then appointed ambassador to The Hague to represent Nicaragua against the US. This action comes 40 years after the Sandinista war.
