Birmingham Bin Strike Nears End After Pay Deal
The commissioners currently running Birmingham City Council have agreed to a settlement, which some suggest was motivated by the upcoming local elections. A settlement has been reached to end a 16-month bin dispute between Birmingham City Council and the UNITE union. The dispute centered on the council's plan to scrap a payment tier for workers. The deal was announced at County Hall in Birmingham, though it could not be finalized or signed due to the ongoing election period, with Birmingham going to the polls on May 7th. The Labour party faces a challenge in retaining control of Birmingham City Council in the upcoming May 7th elections. Labour could lose its majority, potentially falling from 65 out of 101 seats to a much smaller number. The party's message is that the current deal will only be finalized if a Labour council is returned.
