Labour Loses 35 Local Councils, Dominance In Wales

developing BBC Radio 4 London 5d3d Impact 8

The Labour Party is losing seats across the country in the English council elections, according to early results. Former Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who defected to Reform earlier this year, stated she believes Nigel Farage could potentially reach number 10. Braverman suggested there is a high chance of Farage becoming Prime Minister. Reform UK made gains in northern England, including 12 seats in Hartlepool. Both Hartlepool and Redditch are represented by Labour MPs. Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash has called for the Prime Minister to step down. Former Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell suggested Sadiq Khan is no longer an asset. The Reform party performed well in some areas, including Chorley, which was estimated to vote 70% leave in the EU referendum.

This performance is attributed to riding a wave of dissatisfaction and distrust with political parties and the general political system. The Labour party is experiencing a "very, very bad set of figures" in ongoing elections, particularly in Scotland and Wales. Precise election figures are not yet known and are expected in several hours. The Labour Party lost control of at least 35 local councils and over 1400 local councilor seats in recent elections.
