Mandarin Language Restricted In Tibetan Schools
Human Rights Watch reports that Beijing is strengthening Mandarin instruction in Tibet as part of a language harmonization plan for children. A law adopted in March 2026 on ethnic unity requires Mandarin learning prior to kindergarten. Local residents interviewed by the NGO expressed fears that these policies could lead to the extinction of the Tibetan language. Access to the Tibet region remains difficult for investigators. The report alleges that schools in the region are also subject to political and cultural indoctrination. The findings were released in a new Human Rights Watch report.
