Court Suspends University Rector Election In Guatemala

A fifth court granted a provisional injunction to suspend the reelection process at the University of San Carlos. This follows a previous ruling by the 15th Pluripersonal Court of First Instance in Criminal Matters that nullified the election of the rector. The University's Superior Council is expected to meet before the elections. Additionally, the head of the SAAS reported that two individuals are in custody for the theft of a vehicle from a park. A court has suspended the reelection of Walter Mazariegos as rector of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC). The court suspended the election held on April 8, where Mazariegos reportedly secured reelection amid allegations of fraud. The judicial body, acting as an Amparo Tribunal, determined that the circumstances warranted provisional constitutional protection.
